Meet the instructor

Dr. Katie Mitchell
PhD, PT, CAT(C)

Katie Mitchell is a postdoctoral clinician-scientist at the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). She completed a PhD in Kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) in 2023. Her research is focused on how sensory, cognitive, and motor factors affect concussion recovery for return to performance in sport and life. She has a special interest in how sex and gender as well as physical, cognitive, and/or sensory disability influences concussion recovery and brain health across the lifespan.

Katie is a Registered Physiotherapist and Certified Athletic Therapist providing Telehealth concussion care and high performance sport consulting. She completed an honours undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at WLU, an advanced Athletic Therapy certificate from Mount Royal University (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), and Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada).

Katie is a member of the CATA Education and Research Committee and the Concussion in Para Sport (CIPS) international group.

She has presented at conferences including,
• Canadian Concussion Network (CCN-RCC)
• American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
• Canadian Athletic Therapy Association (CATA)
• Sport Innovation (SPIN) Summit
• International Society of Posture and Gait Research (ISPGR)
• 6th Consensus on Concussion in Sport (Amsterdam, 2022)

She has also been invited to speak for professional associations including:

On the bench, Katie has worked within several levels of sport:
• Women's Para Hockey of Canada (2022 to present)
• Sledge Team Ontario (2018 to 2023)

• Waterloo County Rugby Football Club (2011 to 2018)
• CIS Women's Hockey (2009 to 2011)
• OUA Men's Rugby (2008 to 2011)

She has attended major games including, the Women's World Challenge of Para Ice Hockey (2022 & 2023), National Para Ice Hockey Championships (2019, 2022), Toronto Para Pan Am Games (2015), Ontario Para Sport Games (2013), and CIS Women's Hockey National Championships (2010 & 2011).
